Ingredients:

2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 vanilla bean, split and scraped (or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract)
4 large egg yolks
1/4 cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Instructions:
Heat Milk:
In a medium saucepan, combine the milk, half of the sugar, and the vanilla bean seeds and pod (or vanilla extract). Heat over medium heat until the mixture is hot but not boiling.
Whisk Egg Yolks:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, remaining sugar, and cornstarch until smooth and pale in color.
Temper Eggs:
Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling.
